Yorkshire and The Humber is one of the regions of England. It covers most of the traditional county of Yorkshire, along with the part of northern Lincolnshire that was previously in Humberside.

It is one of the two regions (along with the North West) that were expected to have a referendum about the establishment of an elected regional assembly. The North East region of England recently rejected having an elected regional assembly in a referendum. Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott subsequently announced that he will not move orders for other referendums before the relevant provisions expire in June, 2005.

The highest point of the region is Whernside, in the Yorkshire Dales, at 737 metres.

The administration capital is Leeds but the largest city is Sheffield.

It is divided into the following local government areas:

  1. Sheffield (South Yorkshire)
  2. Rotherham (S. Yorks)
  3. Barnsley (S. Yorks)
  4. Doncaster (S. Yorks)
  5. Wakefield (West Yorkshire)
  6. Kirklees (W. Yorks)
  7. Calderdale (W. Yorks)
  8. Bradford (W. Yorks)
  9. Leeds (W. Yorks)
  10. North Yorkshire
  11. York
  12. East Riding of Yorkshire
  13. Hull
  14. North Lincolnshire
  15. North East Lincolnshire

It was originally called Yorkshire and Humberside, and defined as North Yorkshire, West Yorkshire, South Yorkshire and Humberside. Since then, Humberside has been split up, and the councils of West and South Yorkshire abolished, and York has seceded from North Yorkshire. The older form of the name is still occasionally seen.
