Wilhelm Bauer

Wilhelm Bauer (* 23 December 1822 in Dillingen on the Danube; † 20 June 1875 in Munich), a German engineer, designed the first modern u-boats.

All u-boats today are designed by the same principles as Bauer's.

Ships

  • 1850 Brandtaucher, built to Bauers design by August Howaldt of the later Howaldtswerke at Kiel. The purchase offer came from the government of Schleswig-Holstein for its Schleswig-Holstein-flotilla, which was at war with Danmark (1848-1851). The Brandtaucher is an exhibit of the German military history Museum in Dresden.
  • 1856 Seeteufel, built by Bauer for Russia in St. Petersburg.
