Valley of the Queens

From Biocrawler, the free encyclopedia.

The Valley of the Queens or Wadi el-Melikat is a place in Egypt where wives of Pharoahs were buried in ancient times. In ancient times, it was known as Ta-Set-Neferu, meaning –‘the place of the Children of the Pharaoh’, because along with the Queens of the 18th, 19th and 20th dynasties many princes and princesses were also buried with various members of the nobility, It is located at the southern end of the necropolis at ancient Thebes, so far over a hundred tombs have been found in the area, although most were hidden again by Egyptian authorities soon after being discovered.

The valley is located near the better known Valley of the Kings, on the west bank of the Nile across from Thebes (modern Luxor). The purpose of the valley, like the Valley of the Kings, was that it's location would be secret. This would prevent grave robbers from looting the tombs for the treasures buried in them. The valley was begun in the time of Ramesses I. Prior to that time wives were generally buried with their husbands, and some continued to be so.
