VW Citi

Volkswagen Logo

The VW Citi is a car produced by Volkswagen in South Africa. Also known as the CitiGolf, is a facelifted version of the original VW Golf hatchback, which ceased production in Germany in 1983.

Local production of this model also ceased at this time, but Volkswagen South Africa (VWSA) needed an entry level model in its range, and took advantage of the original tooling to produce the Citi. It differs from the original Golf in having a sloping front end, similar to that of the 1984 model Golf.

A sedan version, called the VW Fox, was also produced, along with a pick-up truck(known in South Africa as a bakkie).

The Citi is still in production, but VWSA now produces the European VW Polo as both a hatchback and sedan, which the Citi now complements.
