University of Houston-Clear Lake

From Biocrawler, the free encyclopedia.

The University of Houston-Clear Lake, often called UH-Clear Lake or UHCL, is an upper level university located in southeast Houston, Texas. Under normal circumstances, students are only admitted to a program once they have obtained 54 semester hours of college credit with a grade of C or better or possess an associates degree.

UHCL was authorized in 1971 by 62nd Texas Legislature as the University of Houston at Clear Lake City and began holding classes on campus in the fall of 1974. In 1983, it became a free-standing university separating from the University of Houston and referred to the institution from that point on as the University of Houston-Clear Lake. Today, UHCL is the third largest institution in the University of Houston System with an enrollment of about 8,000 students and is the largest leading upper-level university in the state of Texas.

The UHCL campus is located on a nature preserve adjacent to the master-planned community of Clear Lake City, and consists of four classroom buildings: the Bayou, Arbor, Delta, and Student Services buildings. Unknown to most, the majority of the 400-acre UHCL campus lies in the corporate limits of Pasadena, while the part of campus south of the bayou lies in the city of Houston.
