Ulsan is a metropolitan city in the south-east of South Korea. It lies on the East Sea, 70 kilometres north of Busan at the geographical location 35°33′ N 129°19′ E (http://kvaleberg.com/extensions/mapsources/index.php?params=35_33_N_129_19_E_region:KR_type:city(1,087,958)). In the past, the city was a major center of Korean whaling, which led to its selection as the site of the June 2005 International Whaling Commission meeting.

The city hosts the K-League soccer club Ulsan Hyundai Horang-i and the University of Ulsan.

Industry

The city forms the heart of the country's industrial area called Ulsan Industrial District and is home to the multinational Hyundai corporation. Up to 1962 Ulsan operated as a fishing port and market centre. As part of South Korea's first five-year economic plan, Ulsan became an open port. Additionally, major industrial plants and factories developed, including in particular an oil refinery, fertilizer plants, automobile production and heavy industries. The shipbuilding port Pangojin became part of the city in 1962.
