Anthem Anthem of Ukrainian SSR

The Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic (Ukrainian: Українська Радянська Соціалістична Республіка, Russian: Украи́нская Сове́тская Социалисти́ческая Респу́блика) was created on December 25, 1917, and was a constituent republic of the Soviet Union since the Union was formed in 1922.  After World War II, in 1945, some amendments to the Constitution of the Ukrainian SSR were accepted, which allowed it to act as a separate subject of the international law in some cases and to a certain extent, remaining a part of the USSR at the same time. In particular, these amendments allowed the Ukrainian SSR to become one of founding members of the United Nations (UN) together with the USSR and Byelorussian SSR. This had only a symbolical meaning at that time's reality where Ukraine (as a Soviet republic) had no voice of its own in international affairs. In reality it meant little more than giving the Soviet Union extra seats (and votes) in the UN, which in itself was rather symbolical and had little effect in international affairs. The important seat of the UN Security Council permanent member was occupied by the USSR.

The Ukrainian SSR was renamed into Ukraine on August 24, 1991, and split from the USSR the same day, becoming an independent state.

The capital was first Kharkiv (in 1918-1934) and then Kiev (Kyiv). Crimea was transferred to the republic in 1954 from the Russian SFSR.
