Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute

The Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute is located in Panama (specifically Barro Colorado Island in the Panama Canal Zone). It is the only Smithsonian Institute based outside of the United States with work focusing on tropical rainforest ecology and other biodiversity issues. It was founded in 1923 to survey the biological diversity of the Canal Zone
