The Treaty of Shimoda was signed between the Russian Admiral Efimii Vasil'evich Putiatin and Toshiakira Kawaji of Japan in the city of Shimoda, Japan, on February 7th, 1855. It defined the border between Japan and Russia as passing between the islands of Etorofu and Uruppu in the Kurils, while Sakhalin became a mutal possession. Another part of the treaty stipulated the opening of three harbours, Nagasaki, Shimoda and Hakodate, to provide the Russian fleet with water and wood.ja:日露和親条約
