Torzhok

Torzhok (Торжок in Russian) is a town in the Tver Oblast in Russia. It is located on the Tvertsa River, 60 km west of Tver. Population: 49,000 (1974).
Torzhok was first mentioned in a chronicle in 1139. In 1238, it was destroyed by the Mongols. The town became a part of the Muscovy in 1478. Torzhok was ravanged a number of times by the Polish army in the 17th century. The Soviet authority in Torzhok was established on October 27 (November 9), 1917.
Torzhok is famous for its goldwork embroidery. There is also a museum of Alexander Pushkin, who used to pass through the town on a number of occasions. There are several architectural monuments in Torzhok, including the Church of Ascension (17th century), Monastery of Boris and Gleb (1785-1796), belltower (1894), abbot's residence (1714), Spaso-Preobrazhensky Cathedral (1822) and a number of churches of the 17th-18th centuries.
