Tinajo, Las Palmas

Tinajo is a Canarian municipality in the western portion of the island of Lanzarote in the Las Palmas province in the Canary Islands The population is 5,066 (ISTAC (http://www.gobiernodecanarias.org/istac/), 2003), its density is 37.45/km² and the area is 135.28 km²/13,528 ha. It is located a main highway linking Taiza and Teguise as well as east to Arrecife via LZ20 and is the westernmost terminus and LZ67 to Yaiza. The main industry are agriculture and tourism especially in the park area. The Atlantic Ocean is to the west and north, the mountains are to the south, central and the eastern part. Farmlands along with barren lands dominate the rest of the municipality.

Sites of Interest

The Parque Nacional de Timanfaya or Timanfaya National Park (created in 1974) is a parkland covering the southwestern portion of the municipality and is where most of its mountains are located. The park features volcanic mountains and rugged lands. The rest of the parkland is in Yaiza.

Tinajo has schools, lyceums, a few gymnasia, a few churchs, beaches, a post office, parks and a squares (plaza) including Plaza de la Constitución.
