Thomas Jefferson Dryer (1808-1879) born in 1808. Newspaper publisher. Freemason. Editor of the California Courier in San Francisco, California, USA. Founder and publisher of the Portland Oregonian. Made the first ascent of Mount St. Helens on August 27, 1853, with three companions. Was reportedly the first to climb Mount Hood on August 8, 1854; however there are claims that dispute if that is a fact. Appointed commissioner to the Hawaiian Islands in 1861 by President Lincoln through the influence of Senator Edward Baker.
