The four horrors
From Biocrawler, the free encyclopedia.
The Four Horrors was a method of execution and punishment used in Medieval England and normally reserved for traitors to the English crown. First, the victim was hanged by the neck and allowed to strangle for a time, then was cut down and placed on a rack. After being streched, he was then disemboweled and decapitated. The executioner would then hold the victim's severed head up and shout, "Behold, the head of a traitor!" The head was impaled on a pike, covered with tar and placed on public display on Tower Bridge, while the body was cut into quarters, which were sent to the places associated with the victim's treachery.
