The Oriental Land Company

From Biocrawler, the free encyclopedia.

The Oriental Land Company is a Japanese leisure and tourism corporation that owns the Tokyo Disney Resort in Urayasu, Chiba, Japan.

The company was originally focused on improving the leisure opportunities of the Japanese public, such as building swimming pools and gyms but was approached by The Walt Disney Company in 1980 to finance the first international Disney park. Eventually, Tokyo Disneyland was built and opened in 1983 and the Oriental Land Company decided not to sell the park back to Disney. The company pays a very large amount of money each month to Disney in character and likeness licenses, and Disney has leased their Imagineers to the company to build and design the Tokyo Disney Resort and build a second theme park, Tokyo DisneySea, which opened in 2001.
