The Man in the Maze

The Man in the Maze is a novel written by Robert Silverberg, published in 1968. It tells the tale of a man rendered incapable of interacting normally with other human beings. The novel deals with themes of isolation and social alienation.
The novel begins with a man in the center of a deadly maze, quickly making it clear that he has intentionally trapped himself inside in order to prevent other humans from finding him. A group is attempting to penetrate the maze, however, despite certain risks. This storyline is alternated with flashbacks detailing the manner in which this situation arose.
