The Kraken Wakes

The Kraken Wakes is a 1953 apocalyptic science fiction novel by John Wyndham, originally published under the title Out of the Deeps. The book is published by Penguin with the ISBN 0-14-001075-0.
The novel describes three phases of an alien attack. In the first phase objects from outer space land in the oceans. Investigations show that 'there is something intelligent down there'. Phase two starts with ships being attacked causing havoc to world shipping. Shortly after the aliens start 'harvesting' the land by sending up 'sea tanks', for the purpose of capturing and kidnapping humans from small seaside settlements. In phase three, the aliens start melting the ice caps causing sea levels to rise.
The story follows Mike and Phyllis Watson as they try to survive and discover what is going on.
