The Immortals

The Immortals quartet, by Tamora Pierce, is the story of Veralidaine Sarrasri (usually known as Daine), an orphan with an unusual talent: she can speak with animals.
Daine is accompanied on her travels by the black-robe mage Numair Salmalin, a young dragon named Skysong (or Kitten), and her trusty pony Cloud. She is also friends with the legendary Alanna of Trebond/Pirates Swoop and Olau, King Jonathan, Queen Thayet, and many animals, immortals, and humans. Born in a town called Snowsdale, in Galla, Daine travels to many other kingdoms, thus expanding our knowledge of the Tortallan world.
