Green God
From Biocrawler, the free encyclopedia.
The Green God is a fictional deity of the Cthulhu Mythos. It was created by British author Ramsey Campbell for his short story The Horror Under Warrendown. In it an agent for a publisher of children's books pays a visit to the fictitious farming village of Warrendown in the Severn River valley where he accidentally discovers that the town is populated by mutants belonging to a secret cult worshipping a mysterious subterreanean god, the Green God. The Green God resembles one of the giant head statues of Easter Island (The moai), albeit one completely overgrown with vegetation. The plants, however, are not growing on the surface of a statue. The whole head-like entity, plants and all, is actually the god. The god possesses vine-like tentacles which it can either extend to offer as communion offerings to a worshipper or to capture a victim. The god possesses a strange mutagenic ability; any one who partakes of its flesh (vegetables?) will eventually transform into a grotesque, rabbit-like humanoid being. These rabbit-like mutants worship and serve the god and are continually trying to trick others into joining them by offering them fresh vegetables that are actually harvested from the god. The Green God appears to be a god of fertility or evolution, similar to the fictitious Cthulhu Mythos "goddess", Yidhra. A brief mention of the Green God is made in the multi-volume grimoire, The Revelations of Glaaki. While the Green God is unnamed in Campbell's story, a plant-like god named E'ilor is mentioned in the story Correlated Contents by James Ambuehl. Like the Green God, a brief mention of E'ilor is made in The Revelations Of Glaaki. E'ilor is said to possess vine-like tentacles for offering as communal sacrifice or to capture prey. It is also said to dwell in a large cavern deep beneath a small farming village in the Severn River valley. It is not known whether Ambuehl had meant to imply that the Green God is actually E'ilor although it would certainly appear so.
