The first Tatar rock band was Bolğar, a band active in the late 1980s. Today the most popular Tatar rock band is Xat (since 2001) from Sarman. Another popular are Saq-Soq and 119.
Traditionally, Tatar rock was a Tatar language variant of Russian rock. Lyrics and vocals have more importance than than instrumental sounds.
Other pop-rock groups include Malaylar, Yarda and Ataqlı Radio Şäxeslär.
