Survival kit
From Biocrawler, the free encyclopedia.
Survival kit is a package of tools and supplies prepared in advance as an aid to survival in a wilderness setting. Military aircraft and some spacecraft are typically equipped with a survival kit, and the crew is trained in survival techniques. A slang expression for a survival kit is a "bugout bag".
Useful survival kits are easily portable and include only the minimum elements needed to stay alive, with no extraneous luxury additions to provide for comfort. The kit almost always includes materials for shelter against the elements, water potage and purification, implements for creating fire, light, and emergency signals, a knife and sharpening implement, navigation equipment, first aid supplies, and food.
Typical survival kits include:
- Space blanket
- Plastic bags
- Sturdy cord
- Iodine tablets
- Matches in waterproof case
- Candles
- Magnifying glass
- Whistle
- Mirror
- Swiss army knife
- Sharpening stone
- Good quality compass
- Bandages
- Insect repellant
- Canned food
- Map
Pre-packaged survival kits can include instructions in survival techniques, including first aid methods.
