Posti, or, in full, Suomen Posti Oyj (Finnish for 'The Finnish Post'), is the Finnish state-owned postal service. It has been organised as a public limited company (Oyj in Finnish) since 2001, and is owned entirely by the Finnish government. It is managed by the Ministry of Transport and Communications. The postal service was first founded in Finland in 1638, and it had a legal monopoly in postal delivery until 1994, when competition was allowed in the industry.
Posti is currently the second largest employer in Finland (after the City of Helsinki), employing nearly 24 000 people in various jobs. It is required by law to maintain offices in each municipality and ensure that delivery and collection are carried out every day. However, since the introduction of competition in 1994, the company has been forced to render its operations more effective, and many small post offices have been closed, with the representation services moved to local entrepreneurs, such as shops and service stations.
