During the course of evolution two diferent ways of generating ATP molecules were selected:
1-Substrate level phosphorylation and
2-Oxidative phosphorylation.
1-Substrate level phosphorylation
Itīs the oldest of the two in terms of evolution, occurs under aerobic and anaerobic conditions and here ATP production is coupled to the hydrolysis of energy rich molecules. One example is the formation of ATP in the muscles from creatine phosphate.
