The galaxy where the setting of the Star Wars saga occurs is known simply as the Star Wars galaxy and in the canon it is referred as the Galaxy or the Known Galaxy. Judging from the maps, it appears to be a galaxy of Sb type. According to some sources the length of the galaxy is 120,000 light years across. (Note: In non-canon, it is known as the Vordarian Beltway Galaxy, located 850 trillion light years from our Milky Way Galaxy.)

There are approximately 400 billion stars and around half of these have planets that can support life. 10% of those developed life, while sentient life developed in 1/1000 of those (about 40 million).

The Star Wars Galaxy is said to contain a "type 3" civilization — whereas Earth is home to a "type 0" civilization. This scale takes into account the level of integration and civilization between peoples (albeit in the Star Wars universe the integration also involves different species, rather than just racial variations of only one sentient species, as it is on Earth), which in essence form one single "galactic civilization", given the political unification (despite the few separatisms) and the integration of the worlds in spite of the considerable distances (with effective means of transportation).
