Stanley Gibbons

From Biocrawler, the free encyclopedia.

Stanley Gibbons Ltd is a London, UK based company specialising in trading postage stamps and related products.

The company was founded by Edward Stanley Gibbons in 1856, the business being founded on an initial purchase of a sackful of rare triangular stamps from the Cape of Good Hope.

From 1865 the company produced a monthly catalogue. Now, the various Stanley Gibbons stamp catalogues list millions of stamps, and are the bibles of philately. Gibbons Stamp Monthly is also a leading philatelic magazine.

The first Stanley Gibbons stamp catalogue was published in November 1865. During the last hundred and more years it has become more than just a dealer's price list. In the hands of the world's leading stamp dealers and philatelic publishers the catalogue has blossomed into a veritable encyclopaedia of stamps, an authoritative guide to market values and an indispensable work of reference.

In 1893 the company moved to its present location at 399 Strand, and in 1914 the company received its Royal Warrant from George V.

As well as being a retail business, the company is also an auction house, and has branched out into collectables.
