- Lord Stanley/The Earl of Derby was a powerful position in the English aristocracy with many Earl's gaining great fame and power.

- Henry Morton Stanley, (January 29, 1841 - May 10, 1904) the British-American journalist who "found" David Livingstone. ("Dr. Livingstone, I presume?" was his famous phrase.)
- Charles Henry Stanley (1819 - 1901) the British chess player who was the first chess champion of the United States.
- Frederick Trent Stanley, (? - ?) the American founder of Stanley's Bolt Manufactory in 1843, or his cousin Henry Stanley (? - ?) who founded The Stanley Rule and Level Company in 1857. Both companies were merged in 1920 and continue to make Stanley hardware and tools under the name of Stanley Works.
