St. Petersburg Vedomosti
From Biocrawler, the free encyclopedia.
St. Petersburg Vedomosti (in Russian, Санкт-Петербургские Ведомости) is the oldest Russian newspaper still in circulation.
Founded in 1728 in Saint Petersburg by the Russian Academy of Sciences, it received the status of the official government newspaper. In 18th century, it was issued 3 times a week and mostly consisted of foreign correspondences. From 1748 to 1751, the newspaper was edited by Mikhail Lomonosov.
Since 1831, the newspaper is published daily. In 1860s, under the editor-in-chief V. F. Korsh, it becomes a prominent and popular liberal organ, but in 1874 the government replaced all the editorial staff, which resulted in the newspaper losing a good share of its influence and subscribers.
In 1917, after the bolshevik revolution, the newspaper closed.
In 1991, after the coup, the former Communist Party daily Leningradskaya Pravda was rebranded as the revived Vedomosti and is still published today.
