Specific epithet

A specific epithet is a biological epithet of a species. It is the epithet that follows the genus name in a binomial, e.g. "sapiens" as in "Homo sapiens". It should not be confused with the complete specific name, e.g. "Homo sapiens", which is the binomial name. See also sign (linguistics).
