The Song
The single was co-written by Mariah and Ben Marguiles and produced by Ric Wake. (Mariah had fought to co-produce but was denied permission for the most part for her debut album by her record company at the time, Sony). In this jackswing influenced track, Mariah gets revenge on an ex-lover who wants to reconcile, as she declares "Someday, the one you gave away will be the only one you're wishing for".
It should be noted that "Someday" was one of the five songs on the infamous demo tape handed by Brenda K. Starr to Tommy Mottola that earned Mariah her recording contract. Reportedly, Mariah was not happy with the final version of "Someday" produced, as she and her co-writing partner, Ben Marguiles, were not allowed to produce, and felt that the final product had been too "polished".
Chart Success
Chartwise, at this point in her career, Mariah had 2 #1 singles under her belt, "Vision Of Love" and "Love Takes Time". "Someday" continued this streak and became her 3rd #1 single on the Hot 100.
"Someday" was a much quicker success than her previous two singles. It debuted at a high #37 and 7 weeks later hit #1, a position it maintained for 2 weeks. It spent 19 weeks on the Hot 100, an amazing 15 of them were spent in the Top 40.
The song peaked at #1 on the Hot 100 Airplay and #2 on the Hot 100 Singles Sales chart; this became her first #1 not to top both component charts, although it would have been difficult with many having already purchased the album. The single also became Mariah's first song legible to chart on the Hot Dance Music/Club Play charts and her first #1 on that chart. The single eventually went on to achieve Gold certification.
Internationally, it was another relative flop like "Love Takes Time". While it made the Top 5 in Canada, it only made #38 in the UK and missed out on the Top 40 altogether in Australia. Her album was very successful in these markets, so by this time, the singles weren't expected to make such a huge impact other than to perhaps boost the sales of the album.
Remixes
A phlethora of remixes exist of this song exist as remixed by Shep Pettibone. It was actually these mixes that were promoted to radio and were used in the music videos. The main remix of this song is known as "Someday (New 7" Jackswing)", and was promoted to radio stations. An extended version of the "Someday (New 7" Jackswing)" is known as "Someday (New 12" Jackswing)". In addition to those two mixes, there is also a house mix, known as "Someday (New 12" House)", a slightly extended/edited album version known as, "Someday (New 7" Straight)", and an acapella known as "Someday (Pianoaperacapella)".
Music Video/Remix Music Video
The music video of the song is one of Mariah's few videos that correlates directly to the message of the song with a relatively hefty plot. In the music video, which was filmed on location at a local high school, Mariah recalls how a boy she liked as a kid, who used to treat her unwell, now wants her back in his life. The video makes use of flashbacks, and younger actors are even brought in to portray Mariah and her love interest in these flashbacks. The video is accompanied by a group of young hip-hop dancers, and at one point in the video, Mariah even dances a bit. The main version of the music video was based on "Someday (New 7" Jackswing)". There is also an extended music video with the music from "Someday (New 12" Jackswing)".
