Sierra del Plata
From Biocrawler, the free encyclopedia.
The Mountain of Silver, in Spanish language Sierra del Plata, was a rumoured treasury of silver that was believed to be in South America. This was started when survivors of a shipwreck were given gifts of silver objects by the native peoples. It is this same region that the River Plate or the rio de la plata meaning river of silver is found. Although there is no evidence that any such mountain of silver ever existed, the region is rich in silver. This is what made this region so important to the Spaniards who eventually took control over it. In fact the modern day country of Argentina takes its name from the Latin word argentum, meaning silver.
