Sierra Madre Oriental

From Biocrawler, the free encyclopedia.

The Sierra Madre Oriental is a mountain range in northeastern Mexico, extending 1000 km from Coahuila south through Nuevo León, southwest Tamaulipas, San Luis Potosí, Hidalgo, to northern Puebla and Querétaro, where it joins with the Sierra Madre Occidental and the Eje Volcánico Transversal of central Mexico.

The highest point is Cerro Potosí (3713 m), located at 24°52′ N 100°24′ W (http://kvaleberg.com/extensions/mapsources/index.php?params=24_52_N_100_24_W_).

The range is noted for its high biodiversity and large number of endemic species.

Although separated from the main part of the Sierra Madre Oriental by the Rio Grande river, the Chisos Mountains in Big Bend National Park, southwest Texas are floristically part of the Sierra Madre Oriental.
