"Shiny Happy People" is a song by the band R.E.M. It appeared on their 1991 album Out of Time and was released as a single in the same year. The song features guest backing vocals by Kate Pierson of the B-52's. The song is extremely upbeat, with feelgood lyrics, and was originally written as a joke by the band.
Although it was one of R.E.M.'s biggest hits, "Shiny Happy People" has never been popular with the band or with their main fanbase. It was excluded from the band's 2003 'Best Of' album In Time. The band promised that it would never play the song live, but later performed it on Sesame Street under the title "Furry Happy Monsters".
