The first half of the 18th century saw the twilight of the Moghul imperial power. When his father Muazzam died, Shahuji was 63 years old. He left Lahore for Delhi in order to demand the throne, assuming the title it of Bahadur Shah I.

As his two brothers Azam and Kam Baksh reclaimed the throne, so the reign of Bahadur Shah was marked by fratricidal stuggle. Bahadur made peace with the Rajputs and left the young Shahu in liberty to return to Maharashtra as Raja of Satara and fight the Maratha rebellion.
