Separating funnel

A separating funnel or separation funnel or separatory funnel is a piece of equipment used in science to separate two immiscible liquids or solutions of different densities.

The diagram uses oil and water as an example of two mixtures that can be separated using a separating funnel. The funnel includes a tap on the bottom opening.

To use the funnel, the two liquids would be poured in through the top with the tap closed and left to separate fully. Then the tap can be opened to allow the more dense liquid to be transferred to another vessel. The user must be careful to close the tap exactly when all of the more dense liquid has evacuated the funnel. This requires a certain amount of skill. The remaining liquid can then be transferred to wherever it is needed.

Functionally, it is similar to a gravy skimmer, which operates on the same principles.
