President pro tempore

A President pro tempore is a constitutionally recognized officer of the senate who presides over the chamber in the absence of the President of the Senate. The phrase "pro tempore" means "for the time being".
The President Pro Tempore is elected by the Senate. By custom, it is the senator of the majority party with the longest record of continuous service.
