Scalloway Castle
From Biocrawler, the free encyclopedia.
Scalloway Castle is a picturesque, dramatic castle at the seaside town of Scalloway in the Shetland Islands.
At one time Scalloway was the capital of the Shetland Islands and was the seat of the tyrannical Lord Patrick Stewart, a cousin of Mary, Queen of Scots. He was executed at Edinburgh. Many of Lord Stewart's subjects were tortured and executed, their rotting corpses hung from the ramparts of the castle as a terrifying example to onlookers. The romantic remains of the castle are a stunning sight and the town's main source of tourism. It was built around 1600. It is said that parts of the castle wall are built from human hair, a morbid task said to have been done at the orders of Lord Stewart as a use for his victims' remains.
