Salem, Germany

Salem is a village in the Bodenseekreis district of Baden-Württemberg in Southern Germany, located 9 km north of Lake Constance, with a population of 11,206 (2003).

The monastery of the Cistercian in Salem was founded in 1134 when Ritter Guntram von Adelsreute donated land for the erection of an abbey. Already in the 12th century, the monastery had its own scriptorium which became one of the most important monastery libraries in Europe. Currently the grounds are home to the boarding school Schule Schloss Salem, founded in the 1930's by Kurt Hahn.
