From Biocrawler, the free encyclopedia.
Royal Bank Plaza in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, is the corporate headquarters for the Royal Bank of Canada. The plaza is located on Bay Street between Front and Wellington Streets in the financial district.
Built to replace the bank's former head office in Place Ville-Marie in Montreal, Quebec, Royal Bank Plaza consists of two office buildings: Royal Bank Plaza South and Royal Bank Plaza North. Royal Bank Plaza South, a skyscraper, is the taller of the two at 180 m; Royal Bank Plaza North has a height of 112 m. The exteriors of the structures are largely covered with glass; together they have more than 14,000 windows. Each of these windows is coated with a layer of 24 karat (100%) gold. At a cost of about $70 per window, the total value of gold in the windows of the plaza is over $1,000,000. The gold gives the windows a distinctive colour. Gold was used as an insulator to reduce heating costs.
