RB545

From Biocrawler, the free encyclopedia.

The RB545 was a Liquid Air Cycle airbreathing rocket engine that was proposed to propell HOTOL to orbit using a single stage.

It worked by liquifying air using a hydrogen heat exchanger, separating off liquid oxygen and dumping the remaining gases, and then burning the liquid oxygen with some of the hydrogen. Much of the hydrogen used in the heat exchanger was to be vented overboard; but nevertherless it was comparatively efficient.

Once out of the atmosphere, the RB545 was capable of burning the hydrogen with onboard liquid oxygen as a high efficiency hydrogen/oxygen rocket.
