Puerto Vallarta is a city in the state of Jalisco, Mexico, located at 20°62′ N 105°23′ W (http://kvaleberg.com/extensions/mapsources/index.php?params=20_62_N_105_23_W_). It fronts the Bahía de Banderas on the Pacific Ocean. It is important both as a shipping port and a tourism destination. In 2003 Puerto Vallarta had an estimated population of 165,800 people and reported about 5 million overnight stays by tourists.

Unlike Cancún (another leading Mexican tourist destination), Puerto Vallarta was a traditional village before gaining worldwide recognition as a travel destination.
