Palm-of-the-Hand Stories

In the course of his career, Japanese author Yasunari Kawabata wrote more than 140 very short stores, some less than a single page long, which he called "palm-of-the-hand stories," the earliest published in the 1920 and the last appearing posthumously in 1972. Although scattered individual stories had previously appeared in English, Lane Dunlop and J. Martin Holman published the first substantial volume of English translations, a total of 71 stories drawn from a period of almost 50 years, as Palm-of-the-Hand Stories in 1988. In 1998, J. Martin Holman's The Dancing Girl of Izu and Other Stories collected translations of another 20 of the stories that had been published originally in Japanese before 1930.
