Operating environment

From Biocrawler, the free encyclopedia.

In computer software, an operating environment usually refers to a GUI front-end on top of an operating system.

A well-known operating environment is Microsoft Windows 3.11 (the operating system of which was MS-DOS) and its predecessors.

Other operating environments include KDE, GNOME, FVVM and other Linux front-ends.

Most operating systems today include the operating environment, and term has become somewhat antiquated.
