Nunavut (electoral district)

Nunavut is the name of the only federal electoral district in Nunavut, Canada. Its population is 26,745. (2001). It was previously known as Nunatsiaq. Nunavut is also a Canadian Senate Division that follows the same boundaries and was created on April 1, 1999. The creation of Nunavut resulted in the expansion of the Canadian Senate to 105 members.

Nunavut is the largest electoral district in the Western and Northern hemispheres. The only larger electoral district in the world is Kalgoorlie, Western Australia.

History

The electoral district was created in 1976 when the district of Northwest Territories was broken into two. It became the riding of Nunavut in 1996.
