Normanton, West Yorkshire
From Biocrawler, the free encyclopedia.
Normanton is a town in West Yorkshire, England, lying north east of Wakefield and south west of Castleford.
Normanton was originally surrounded by a moat. A grammar school was founded in Normanton in the 1590s, but the town remained very small until it became the focus of several railway lines in the mid-nineteenth century and coal mining began in the area.
Normanton has suffered much decline in recent years, from what many locals perceive to be the poor management skills and corruption of the small and insular local town council. However, Normanton is now a growing commuter suburb of the 'Greater Leeds' area, favoured for its relatively cheap housing and good transport links.
