Norma Jean & Marilyn is a 1996 made-for-TV biographical film, which was made by and premiered on HBO. Ashley Judd and Mira Sorvino played alter egos of Marilyn Monroe, with Judd playing her during Monroe's early years when she was still known as Norma Jean. The film also featured Josh Charles, Ron Rifkin, David Dukes as Arthur Miller, and Peter Dobson as Joe DiMaggio. It was written by Jill Isaacs, based on the 1985 biography Goddess: The Secret Lives of Marilyn Monroe (ISBN 0026154609) by Anthony Summers, and directed by Tim Fywell.
The tagline for the film serves to summarize the plot: Marilyn Monroe was our fantasy. Norma Jean was her reality. The film features dream-like scenes in which Monroe and her former self appear together, with Norma Jean sometimes taunting Marilyn.
It was nominated for five Emmy Awards, including nominations for both lead actresses. Christopher Young received a nomination for the film's music.
