Nordmøre
From Biocrawler, the free encyclopedia.
Nordmøre (lit. "North-Møre") is a landscape of mid-Norwegian county Møre og Romsdal and comprises the municipalities of Kristiansund, Averøy, Frei, Tingvoll, Surnadal, Rindal, Aure, Halsa, Tustna, Eide, Sunndal, Gjemnes and Smøla. The only city in Nordmøre is Kristiansund.
Of the thirteen municipalities, five are located (mainly) on islands: Kristiansund, Averøy, Frei, Tustna, and Smøla; seven lie on the coast (including between, adjacent to, or at the end of, fjords): Tingvoll, Surnadal, Aure, Halsa, Eide, Sunndal, and Gjemnes; while only one is landlocked: Rindal.
In the early Viking Age, before Harald Fairhair, Nordmøre was a petty kingdom whose ruler was known as the Mørejarl (lit. "Møre-Earl").
