Nonylphenol

From Biocrawler, the free encyclopedia.

Nonylphenol is an organic compound of the wider family of alkylphenols. It is a product of synthesis, not naturally present in the environment. For this reason it is a xenobiotic. Nonylphenol is indeed the name of a cluster of isomers formed during the alkylation process of phenols. In nonylphenols a hydrocarbon chain of nine carbon atoms is attached to the phenol ring in position para, that is to the fourth carbon atom of the ring (see figure). Nonylphenol is a pale yellow liquid at room temperature. The compound's melting point is -10°C and boiling point is 295-320°C.
