Nicholas Marcellus Hentz

From Biocrawler, the free encyclopedia.

Nicholas Marcellus Hentz (July 25, 1797 - November 4, 1856) was born in Versailles, France. He emigrated to the United States in 1816 and became a pioneering entomologist in the field of arachnology.

Numerous spider species were categorized by him, and as is custom in binomial naming, species are noted with the name and year of the person who classified them. Browsing through spider spieces the name Hentz appears often, along with Walckenaer and Pickard-Cambridge. A few spiders of note Hentz classified are the Yellow sac spider and the Southern house spider.

He died in Marianna, Florida.
