New Connecticut

From Biocrawler, the free encyclopedia.

On January 15, 1777 the Republic of New Connecticut (the present-day state of Vermont) declared its independence, both from Great Britain and from New York.

On July 8 of that same year, the name of the fledgling nation was officially changed to Vermont, although it was sometimes known as the Republic of the Green Mountains. It remained an independent republic until 1791, which it joined the U.S.
