Nana Plaza
From Biocrawler, the free encyclopedia.
Nana Plaza (officially Nana Entertainment Plaza; shortened NEP) is a red-light district in Bangkok Thailand. It lies on Sukhumvit soi 4 across from the Nana hotel. Together with Soi Cowboy and Patpong it comprises the red-light districts where mainly westerners hang out. However, since the beginning of the 21st century more Japanese men have found their way there because of the high prices in the Japanese clubs in Bangkok.
The Plaza is in the shape of a square and has a ground floor and two additional floors. The Plaza originally started out as an area with restaurants in the 1970s and 1980s. During the eighties go-go bars started to appear and slowly took over the restaurants. At present (2005), the enclosed part of Nana Plaza consists of entirely go-go bars; the Woodstock Pub, the lone exception, sold out to Rainbow group (who already operate 3 other go-go bars in the plaza) and has opened as "Rainbow 4." The open part of the ground floor is occupied by several beer bars.
Most women working at bars in Nana Plaza are available to leave the bar with customers upon payment of a bar fine. While most bars in Nana Plaza do not employ kathoeys ("ladyboys" or transwomen), a few do so exclusively. As of 2005 these are Obsession (on the ground floor), Casanova (on the second floor) and Cascade (on the top floor); staff at these are almost all pre-operative, as compared to the kathoey bars in Patpong.
Nana Plaza is within walking distance from the SkyTrain's "Nana Station".
