Meiwa

From Biocrawler, the free encyclopedia.

Meiwa (明和) was a Japanese era after Hōreki and before An'ei and spanned from 1764 to 1772. The reigning emperors were Go-Sakuramachi and Go-Momozono.

Change of Era

Because of the enthronement of Empress Go-Sakuramachi, on June 2 (?), 1764, the era became Meiwa ("Bright Harmony")

Events of the Meiwa Era

  • September (?), Meiwa 2 (1765) Five-momme coin issued
  • Meiwa 5 (1768) Five-momme usage halted
  • February (?), Meiwa 9 (1772) Great Meiwa Fire, one of the three Great Edo Fires. This year being a succession of calamities, it was said that "Meiwa 9 is Year of Trouble"
